Position Overview
The General Counsel Division seeks an experienced and mission-driven attorney to serve as Senior Staff Counsel. This role focuses on developing, investigating, and litigating cases addressing systemic violations of New York City’s deceptive and unfair practices laws. The ideal candidate will bring strong litigation experience, sound judgment, and creative legal strategies to advance consumer protection enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Staff Counsel will:
Evaluate incoming matters and determine whether investigations should be initiated; identify legal theories, develop investigative strategies, and oversee investigations through completion.
Review investigative findings and compliance reports for legal sufficiency.
Prepare and litigate cases by gathering and presenting evidence; interviewing and preparing witnesses; conducting examinations and cross-examinations; and presenting oral arguments before New York State Supreme Court or OATH.
Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents at all stages of litigation.
Communicate with consumers, opposing counsel, and regulated entities to advance investigations, enforce regulations, and resolve matters through negotiation or settlement.
Recommend appropriate enforcement pathways, including litigation, settlement, or informal resolution.
Try cases before relevant adjudicatory bodies.
Collaborate with other DCWP divisions and external government agencies.
Enforce a broad range of consumer protection laws within the agency’s jurisdiction.
Supervise junior attorneys and legal support staff, as assigned.
Perform additional duties as needed to support the division’s work.
