Job Description
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With a workforce of approximately 1,000 staff, the Division oversees a wide range of public health areas, including environmental investigations, lead poisoning prevention, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest control.
The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS) protects the public—particularly New York City’s most vulnerable populations—from health and safety hazards. This includes oversight of food safety in establishments where meals are served to the public, such as restaurants, school cafeterias, mobile food vending carts, senior centers, and soup kitchens. BFSCS also enforces regulations related to first- and second-hand smoke in workplaces and public spaces, monitors compliance in facilities such as tattoo parlors, correctional facilities, and homeless shelters, and investigates environmental health complaints submitted by NYC residents.
