Job Description

Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable movement of people and goods on New York City streets. The division supports economic vitality, social equity, and public safety through street planning, design, analysis, signage, transit development, freight mobility, markings, and initiatives that protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Within TPM, the Office of Livable Streets (OLS) is dedicated to advancing strategic planning, community engagement, policy development, research, design, implementation, and long-term management of streets that are safe, inclusive, resilient, and supportive of active transportation and economic vitality. OLS places special emphasis on Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets to meet evolving transportation needs. The Office of Livable Streets seeks a Transportation Specialist to serve as Bicycle Wayfinding Program Coordinator within the Street Furniture Unit (SFU). About the Street Furniture Unit (SFU) SFU manages the planning, procurement, installation, and maintenance of bicycle parking, benches, leaning bars, and wayfinding signage for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders across all five boroughs. These programs aim to improve walkability, bikeability, and overall street vibrancy. SFU collaborates closely with other TPM units and maintains comprehensive records of street furniture assets using Microsoft Access, GIS datasets, SharePoint forms, and custom field applications in partnership with NYC DOT IT. Key Responsibilities Under the direction of the SFU Deputy Director of Data & Design, the Bicycle Wayfinding Program Coordinator will lead planning and development efforts to modernize and expand New York City’s bicycle and greenway wayfinding system. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conducting a citywide inventory and developing a GIS database of all bicycle and greenway wayfinding signage located on streets, in parks, and on private property. Evaluating existing signage networks to assess effectiveness, consistency, and usability. Developing a comprehensive citywide bicycle and greenway wayfinding strategy, including design standards, siting criteria, and maintenance guidelines. Conducting on-site user testing and field analysis to validate wayfinding strategies. Coordinating internal workshops and collaborating with partner agencies on design and inventory initiatives. Documenting new signage design standards, content guidelines, and placement criteria. Supporting the integration of updated specifications across bicycle, pedestrian, and transit wayfinding systems. Producing comprehensive signage network plans and progress reports for DOT leadership. Managing and maintaining bicycle facility GIS datasets. Leading production of the annual NYC DOT Bike Map. Reviewing consultant deliverables and coordinating with other DOT units as needed.
